Unit Job Summary

Research Assistant: The Clinical Neuroscience & Psychopharmacology Research Unit (CNPRU) conducts research into the biology and treatment of personality disorders, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. Assist with the protocols and clinical drug trials, administer and score selected assessment instruments, handle recruitment of study subjects, and manage and organize the data collected in the CNPRU. Assist in the preparation of lab reports, grant submissions, data analytic activities and general academic research efforts. Provide support to enhance the unit efficiency in various aspects of the management functions, including ordering supplies and equipment, shipping receiving, scheduling and testing study participants, etc.

Recruit research subjects. Along with the necessary paperwork, perform a phone screen. Schedule potential subjects for appointments with the CNPRU research staff and enter necessary information into the shared calendar.

Make all the necessary arrangements for scheduling and payment. As needed, develop advertising, posters, newsletters, or brochures for recruitment of subjects. After the advertisement has been posted, take the calls from interested candidates and maintain the recruitment/screening/scheduling issues.

Provide assistance with research protocols. Administer a variety of forms and questionnaires to subjects, collect forms, check for quality control, enter collected data, help maintain source document binders according to protocol procedures, anticipate problems with the study and notify the proper personnel, troubleshoot, process the specimens and storage or shipment, order necessary supplies, track and disperse travel reimbursement, and contact subjects by phone.

Provide assistance with laboratory management functions including maintaining files, answer phones, distributing and sending mail, purchasing of supplies and equipment, making copies, sorting files, preparing shipments, etc. Support projects as directed by the faculty members, director and assistant director. These projects could include doing research, retrieving articles from the library, and other office work that will help the CNPRU, like creating and maintaining databases and spreadsheets, coordinating reimbursement of study subjects and supporting CNPRU staff in laboratory procedures.

Contacts with others. Come into contact with individuals from outside of the organization. People will be screened and recruited into the active studies of the CNPRU. Within the organization, this individual will come into contact with other staff members of the CNPRU, the Department of Psychiatry, and other specialized areas of the medical center (e.g., Clinical Research Center, fMRI, etc.), as is necessary in carrying out the position responsibilities. In performing the duties necessary for this position, this individual may come into contact with sales representatives, members of outside research groups, and members of local community organizations.

Education

High school diploma, or equivalent, required.

Bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, or other bachelor's level degree pertinent to behavioral brain sciences preferred.

Experience

Relevant post secondary experience required.

Experience coordinating research studies preferred. Experience supervising research staff preferred. Experience working in a research laboratory with difficult population strongly preferred. Knowledge of MRI and/or EEG preferred. Familiarity with SPSS and other statistical programs;

Competencies

Excellent knowledge of computers, including word processing, spreadsheet and database software required. Knowledge of Internet searches required. Outstanding writing and verbal communication skills required. Ability to work independently required. Above average organizational skills, ability to conduct detailed work with great accuracy and attention to detail required.

Knowledge of SPSS and Photoshop preferred. Basic knowledge about fMRI preferred.
